Thanks for your comment, Mark. I often wonder whether people are at all aware of such traits in their work. This is the only work of Connolly's I've read, so I won't comment on his other books, but the way he portrayed women in The Book of Lost Things will make me less likely to buy other books of his. Since we women are more than half of the population and buy more books than men do, Connolly should give some thought to the issue for commercial reasons if nothing else.

I'm really responding more to Lenea's review than to the audio version of this book, although this is the book that attracted me to Connolly. I didn't notice the mysogeny when I read it, but it was, at least in my view, much harder to miss in his collected short stories titled Nocturnes. These are tales of horror, and guess what a lot of them have in common: female monsters. These are also nowhere near as well-written as The Book of Lost Things.

I look at the gushing over his Charlie Parker novels and wonder if they're substantially different. Whether they are or not, Mr. Connolly has issues with women that he really ought to resolve.
